Formed in 1903, The Salmon & Trout Association (S&TA) enjoys a UK-wide membership of game anglers, fishery owners/managers, affiliated trades and members of the public with an interest in conserving the aquatic environment and its dependent species.

The S&TA address all issues relevant to fisheries legislation and regulation, together with environmental and species management and conservation. It has close working relationships with Government departments and agencies, advising them over fisheries and angling matters and influencing their decision-making processes on behalf of all those with an interest in the aquatic environment.

S&TA has 100,000 individual and club members throughout the UK within a countrywide Branch network. A small professional staff is based in London supported by many volunteers throughout the country. The S&TA has excellent contacts in both Houses of Parliament, the devolved UK Governments and with senior officials in the European Commission.

The Patron of the S&TA is HRH The Prince of Wales, with The Duke of Northumberland as the President. A Board of Trustees has overall responsibility for the Association, while a Management Council, comprising democratically elected representatives from Wales, Northern Ireland and the nine regions in England, oversees the day-to-day affairs of the company. Scotland has its own elected Council and a representative attends the Management Council. Policy issues are developed by an appointed Environment and Technical Committee, which, in turn, establishes working groups to cover specific issues, all coordinated by a small scientific and policy department and the Chief Executive.

Although members are mainly drawn from those with an interest in game fisheries, the association’s wide-ranging environmental remit is ultimately for the public benefit. The S&TA therefore represent not only fisheries people, but all those with an interest in the management and conservation of the aquatic environment and its dependent species.
