A Lurcher chasing a LureThe Lurcher is not an actual breed of dog.  Rather, it is a type of dog, which usually has a member of the sighthound family for one of its parents.  Sighthound breeds include the Greyhound, Whippet, Deerhound, Borzoi and Sluki.  Other breeds commonly found within the family tree of a Lurcher include Border Collies and Bedlington Terriers. The Highclere Game and Country Fair is proud to offer a comprehensive programme of lurcher showing and field events, courtesy of the Coursing Crew.

A Terrier Puppy at Highclere Terriers EventHighclere is very much a traditional sporting Estate, and as such terriers have always been very popular at the Highclere Game and Country Fair, both with visitors and showing competitors.

The Terrier breeds were developed for hunting vermin of all shapes and sizes, and therefore priority was originally given to their working abilities rather than to appearance.  They are an extremely tough and hardy group of dogs, and generally small in size to enable them to work underground.

The term “terrier” derives from “terra”, the Latin word for earth. The Highclere Game and Country Fair is proud to offer a comprehensive programme of terrier showing and field events, courtesy of the Coursing Crew.
